Artist Statement
Visual artist specializing in illustration, character art, and post production.
My style of illustration is highly rendered, emphasizing the behavior of light and how it interacts with objects in a composition. I prefer color over monotone, and use a diverse array of hues while playing with the lighting in my scenes. While doing so, I also focus on maintaining a general palate and a specific color language for each piece.
I enjoy exploring visual effects to finish my artwork, which I layer using blend modes and transparency to increase depth of visual interest. Among those I enjoy are noise or TV static effects, blowing up the exposure and brightness of lit parts of a scene, and layering vignettes and gradients for subtle hue shifts.
My art explores themes such as humanity’s relationship with the natural world, the complexity and physiology of animals, and mankind’s relationship with his own basal instincts.
I am fascinated with biology and natural sciences - animals have always been a favorite subject of mine and much of my work takes a scientific approach to fantasy creature design, applying real-world elements and science to explain fiction.
Comedy is an integral element of how I approach my work - I believe that balancing lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek themes with more serious concepts is essential to allow digestibility and understanding. Comedy bridges the gap between spheres of understanding, allowing interpersonal connections otherwise impossible.
